The above link from surfline shows most of the goods surfing spots in the Caribbean. If you notice, it is mostly the places with exposure to the Atlantic. There are more places without surf in the Caribbean that there are places with waves. But there are definitely places where you can find some surf.

There are also some places with very tame surf in Hawaii where the tourists can take a lesson or two. Thousands of people do it every year.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on.

However, it is only fair warning, that unless you are already pretty much a 'waterman' (or woman as the case may be), you will have great fun, but it takes a lot more than a week or so to learn how to surf (for real). Good, luck, and have fun....
