I want to surf so bad , But my parents say that i'm not allowed. Surfing is something i've wanted to do since i was 9 and now im 15 and i feel like i'll never be able to surf. The boards are expensive and so is the equipment but i've got a part time job and if i work extra hours i can buy these things but i get told there a waste of money another excuse for them to tell me not to surf. I need help how can i persuade them.

  1. Your 15 - what makes you think you'll NEVER be able to surf? You've got your whole life ahead of you! Anyway as soon as your an adult you can do whatever you want to with your life, so if you want to surf then you go surf. My cousin's 25 and he's just started out on a surfing degree at university, so it is possible to do it whenever you want.

Depending on where you live, you could try asking your parents if you can go on one of the surfgirl events from ripcurl - it includes free surfing tuition and usage of boards & wetsuits and its for girls only. There's also live music and other events. Check it out on the internet for more details. This should give you the chance to try it out and see what you think of it whilst taking care of the money issue.

Don't worry im sure you'll hit the waves someday! Good luck!

  2. oh dont worry, since i was little ive wanted to do surfing and snowboard, but my parents were alllways against the idea due to cost and the area we live near is not near a decent beach or a mountain so i was at home playing games like ssx and swimming evey week it allways been a dream then last summer i turned round to my parents when we were in newquay and said i want surf lessons, they said okay thinking that it would just be a one of holiday thing so there i was surfing everyday for like 8 hours sraight and because my parents saw how much i enjoyed it and how determind i was there buying me my own board next month, :D and with snowboarding i went and job a part time job at my local indoor slope and got free lessons and now i snowboard every week and my parents are still against it because i do jumps etc.. but i just do it now im 16 they dont really have a say in the matter.

but if your parents are really really really against it,  they cant stop controll you all your life so when you turn 18 get ya self down to your local brake and go for it :D

but seriously you have your whole life ahead of you dont write it off just yet.

  3. ya some parents seem to get stuck on the idea that they think all surfers are losers and freeloaders and that its  a waste of time; which nowadays isnt true. but if your 15 your almost able to drive, so who cares they cant stop you from going to the beach

  4. Blame Science

  5. If you have friends who surf, borrow their board(s) and if you are saving up for board, buy it and don't tell your parents.  (Although this may cause more trouble if your parents force you to return it).  But you could keep it at a friend's.  My dad will only let me surf if he's watching me, which gets pretty annoying (although I am pretty new to the sport) but how am I supposed to get good if I can only go when he permits?  My revenge is waking him up at 6 in the morning to take me to the beach ; )  but I wish I could stay all day - not just a few hours.... but why should I complain, at least I am surfing!  Anyways, sometimes you just gotta take matters into your own hands.  If the waves around you are small (for me- Wrightsville Beach) then it might be easier to persuade them into letting you surf, but by what you said, money is the problem... It's YOUR money, not theirs!
