Surfing near Georgia?

I might move to Savannah, Georgia next year (about 2 hrs north of Jacksonville) and was wanting to pick up surfing this summer, but I haven't heard much about waves in that area. Any good places within 3 hours north or south of savannah?

  1. surfline.com  is a good information source, check it out.

You are best off driving down to Jacksonville or up to Charleston, the coast of Georgia is generally lacking in decent surf, and summer is the worst season for all of the Atlantic Coast. There are good shops in the metropolitan Charleston area. They can hook you up with lessons and a rental board to get started, and when you get ready, they can help you pick the right board for your weight, skill level, local wave conditions and your budget. same goes for Jacksonville, although I have never surfed there myself. A little further south in Florida, you can find some excellent surf spots with a good local surfing population, and great shops to help you get started.

    "Georgia Introduction

Let's face it. You're not going to Georgia on a surf trip. The state's coast is way west of the continental shelf -- in some cases, more than 60 miles -- it doesn't offer easy access to most beaches and those beaches that are accessible don't promise much in the way of waves. In fact, on some days, a lake with a wakeboard is a far better option."
