  1. Yes, and lots of it. Although most surfers, shapers (builders/designers of surfboards) and surf retailers just started doing things instinctively, science has become a significant part of the surf industry, and important to the smart surfer. Climatology, wave action, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics are all things that the surf industry takes into consideration in today's world.

    Wow, what an image, a bunch of 'surfer dudes' with horn rimmed glasses and pocket protectors!

    It helps to understand at least some of the physics behind what happens when you surf, on a certain type of wave on a certain type of surfboard. It's funny, I see lots of answers in this section by people(I guess mostly kids) who have no clue about the physics involved in surfing. But I guess if you want to know what time it is, you don't really have to know how to build a clock.

    I have been surfing since 1966, and back then, I never even thought about the physics involved. In fact, I barely passed phyisics in High School. I wish I had learned it then, I would be a big shot in the surfing industry today!
