  1. First, because of water temps, you'll want a wetsuit whether your in NorCal or Southern.  I'm in Orange County, and in December, you'll see water temps around 53-55 degrees F. The further north you go, the colder the water... Right now, the temp is starting to come up... it's around 63-63 degrees F.    In December, none of the spots would qualify as crowded.

Lots of first time surfers learn at San Onofre State Beach.  There's camping there, and easy access to some pretty tame waves at a spot called Old Man's.

Links below to some instructors, and some camps you can sign up for.

  2. The good news is that California has good surfing year-round, and the Winter time is usually less crowded than Summer.  Bad news is that when the surf is really good it will get crowded in the water anyway!

My first pick would be San Onofre State Beach and The Trestles surf spot.  Camping is on top of the bluff so its a bit of a walk down to the beach, but definitely worth it.  Other places further South into San Diego County would include South Carlsbad State Beach and San Elijo State beach.  Check the following website:  http://www.parks.ca.gov/

    Have fun!

Surfboards and Wet-Suits can be rented in San Clemente or Dana Point, not too far from there. Or further South in Encinitas.
