  1. the waves of the pacific:

beautiful, not so tall, and sometimes frightening. my words of advise:

    1. start on a long board, they are easier to manuver and are better to balance on.

    2. share the waves, don't go alone! bring some of your buds or family members

    3. my advise for surfing in the atlantic:

well i've never done it before so all i can really say is make sure your wearing a wet suit! the water will be cold (if not freezing)!

now to answer the question (lol):

in the pacific the waves are from 1-7 feet tall.

i'm not sure what the height for the atlantic is though (i've never surfed there).

follow my rules for the waves though. they helped me out a ton on my first waves. o and for number 2: it would help if your bud/family member knew how to surf!

    good luck and happy holidays!

  2. okay babs, if ya never surfed before it6 can be quite frightening BUT ya gotta learn properly before you even attempt to hit the water....basically you need balance, best thing to do is hit Newquay in cornwall and take lessons, the guys there will teach you properly & you will surf in next to no time...its all a case of balance, but you need to be a competant swimmer too..take it from me I surf & scuba dive & you need to have a brave head on ya COS it aint easy poppet. & if ya surfing proper the waves are roughtly 25-40 fet ish, sometimes bigger depending on the weather, the worse the weather the bigger the waves.

  3. I've been all around the coasts, and if you live in the northeast, i would suggest th Jersey Shore. I've surfed there at my friend's beachhouse and there was a good sweel of waves about 10-12 ft. Be sure to wear a wetsuit up there because that water is cooollld.

  4. in hawii they can easily get up to 25+ in the summer in the right spots, but normally i surf 20-25s i've wiped out on a 30, it hurt like h**l. in the pacific i've seen 10s but mostly 1-7s in australia they're ok, i forget the height

u should start with a long board on smaller waver 3-6 ft they are amazingly easy, easy for me to say :). u r going to wipe out a bunch, but thats normal

    don't worry u'll get better

  5. i live in san Diego California and the waves here are usally 1-6 ft high.  a couple months ago there as a huge swell so we got waves as high as 20ft but thats the first time i have seen it happen

  6. Tough to say for a beginner.  I surf about 3-10 foot waves only 10 foot on a good day.  well lets see, for a beginner you should probobly be surfing about 3 through 5 feet.  I would also suggest doing it in the summer and wearing a wetsuit if you're in the northeast.  Hopes this helps

  7. Get yourself a longboard, (at least 9' long), and you can catch and ride just about ANY size wave no matter how small!

Do push ups to build some upper body strength, (you'll need this for paddling and pushing yourself up to stand), and some swimming to get comfortable in the water and to also build cardio and well as paddling stamina.

Here's a really great article I always recommend to beginners... it's called "Learn How to Surf in 1 Day" and it has some basic step-by-step instructions:

    Good luck and have fun!

  8. If you want to surf the northeast try surfing in the summertime. First of all, the waves aren't that big and the water is warm, especially in August.  You are looking at 2-3 foot waves.  I would recommend the Jersey Shore.  The Fall and Winter have the best waves with hurricane swells and winter storm swells.  I have seen swells as big as 15 feet.  September can be an excellent month to surf as the water is warm and the surf is good.  Try surfline.com to get surf reports of surf spots around the world, including the Northeast,
