  1. I would reccomend starting on a thicker shortboard.  Both the egg and fish designs might be something to look into.  an egg, would have a rounder tail and nose, but it would be alot thicker and have alot of float, making it a good intro to shortboards.  The fish, is more of a "shortboard"  with thinner nose and rails but still alot of float.  In the end its all up to personal preference and style.

two boards I would reccomend are both shaped by greg webber in Australia.  take a look at both the CD (egg) or the FatBurner (not quite a fish, but same dimensions, excluding the tail)

  2. maybe an egg shape, get a nice wide one with alot of volume, like a flyer, or fatboy flyer! Or you could just go straight into a small thruster

  3. How old are you? How big are you? What type of break will you be surfing? Will you be taking lessons?

Generally, a long board is the  best to learn on, depending on what you weigh, and how tall you are, the term long board can be a relative thing. My 7 year old granddaughter rides a 6'6" soft top fun board. An old fat guy like me would best start out in the 9 foot range that's nice & fat (2 5/8", 3"thick blank).

Some people do learn on short boards, it can be done, just not as easily. Fun shapes are great for less experieced surfers. You might also see them marketed as a mini-mal. Go to a good local surf shop (not a bathing suit store that sells surfbaords) and the folks there will help hook you up with the right board for your size, skill level and local break. The advice you get at a surf shop comes form people in the business. For all you know, all of us here on line live in Nebraska and only surf in our dreams.
