Surfline sets up memorial paddle out for Sean Collins
To honour the legendary surf forecaster and Surfline.com founder Sean Collins who recently died from a heart attack, Surfline.com has arranged for a memorial paddle out on Saturday, January 7, at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America.
“Please come join us to remember an amazing man, a legend -- a man who not only touched many of our hearts but changed the surfing world forever,” writes Surfline on their website.
According to an announcement made on Facebook, the memorial paddle out is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m. last for around 30 minutes.
Aside from the memorial paddle out, a memorial fund has also been set up to raise money which Collins’ family will donate to a number of charitable causes that had been meaning for the deceased surf-forecaster.
The 59-year-old Collins died after suffering a fatal heart attack while playing tennis at a club near his home in Seal Beach.
The Californian played a crucial role in the revolution and progression of surfing by mastering the imperfect science of surfing and predicting the nature of the waves. The huge amount of variables that needed to be controlled and predicted were unable to
keep him at bay and thus, using his gifted mind and skills, he was able to give accurate predictions of waves.
Collins had dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries of the waves and the effects of winds. He not only learned all this for himself, but also shared his knowledge with others.
The earliest form of Surfline was established by the Seal Beach-resident in March 1985 and offered its services via telephone. However, with the advent of Internet, Collins moved the entire operations to the Internet. In a matter of years, the website become
one of the most popular surfing website in the world, generating a huge traffic on daily basis.
Collins’ various invaluable contributions towards the progression of surfing led to his induction in the Hall of Fame in 2008.
Collins is survived by his wife Daren, his two sons Tyler and AJ, his 82-year-old mother Gloria and three siblings Whitney Jr., Gloria and Robert.
