do they test for stds? or can they? iam getting shoulder surgery and was hoping to get everything done at once

iam talking about the blood and urinalysis test pre op before my surgery.

  1. No, that is not a test that is done pre-op.  We test only for things that are of use for the surgery, and it's highly unlikely that your shoulder problems are related to an std.

    An orthopedic surgeon isn't going to be able to help you with std's anyway.

    See your family doctor or gynecologist/urologist to be tested and treated.


  2. Generally with the pre op testing they don't test for stds.  They tend to test for things that could cause complications during and after surgery.  If you ask them they may run the extra tests for you.

  3. Ask your surgeon to order the tests even though he/she may not be able to treat you. You'll need to sign a special consent for an HIV but they can routinely screen for herpes as well as syphillis. Might save you a co-pay.
