Surgery question????

ok so I am getting surgery again friday and at the physical i got to make sure I am all good for the surgery she was asking me questions to make sure I am good for the nock out stuff (..cant spell the name of the stuff)

and one of the questions was have I ever used drugs or alcohol and i have used both but I have only drank like 4 times and i have only smoked like 5-6 times since my last surgery so thats not a problem that i answered no on that question right??

It is not a problem and you were right to be honest. The questions are designed to identify patients who would be at higher risk for complications due to drug and alcohol abuse. Most providers will ask you for a clarification of "social" if your answer is "I only drink socially." They really don't want to pass judgement, they just want to make sure that you get the care you need.

i work in surgery so the answer you should have said is i drink socially and smoke  socially.  the reason they ask this is that if you are under the influence when they give you the anesthesia, it could have drastic side effects up to including death.  your history, from what you have said, you shouldnt have any difficulty as long as you dont do any before your surgery.  always be honest with your docs, its your life they dont want to risk,  they arent cops.

I think you'll be okay because my 73 year old neighbor smokes a pack a day and shes had many many surgeries, she also has vodka mixed with coke everyday at 2pm. If she's made it, I would think anyone could.  You should of been honest though just in case.

The most dangerous part of surgery is the anaesthesia. The questions were asked to make sure your lungs weren't compromised and there will be no surprise drug interactions during surgery. With your minimal use, you answered correctly!
