Question:

Surgical Technologist or Perioperative (Surgical Nurse) as a career?

Ok, I really want to work in the O.R., but I absolutely love seeing anatomy up close (yes, blood and guts and all). I'm just afraid that a surgical nurse, which usually takes on the role of circulator, will not be really "involved" in the actual surgery and patient care. And I'm afraid that as a surgical technologist, I will have no room for advancement.

I really don't care about who makes the most. seriously, I don't

  1. As a surgical Tech, you can eventually become first assist and get up close and personal with the anatomy!

  2. I don't know that a surg tech is all that involved in the surgery. You prep the patient and the O.R., maybe hand out the tools, but you won't be doing any surgery.

One avenue of advancement might be management of the O.R., but that's even less related to the surgery.

The surgical nurse would be the primary person responsible for patient care after the surgery, dressing the wounds, assessing the patient, etc.

Sounds like you ought to choose one of these and later on, consider going to med school and being a surgeon.
