Surname Ulliel?

Question

Hah. I saw one question about surnames and I felt obligated to ask if anyone knew what it came from. I know there is an actor named Gaspard Ulliel and the only thing we have in common is that we are both French. I know it isn't very common so perhaps you know more?

Woah, my heart skipped a beat since you mentioned Gaspard Ulliel. Great actor! *Drools a little* Well, you can try "My Heritage.com" to find out more about that particular surname. By the sound of it, it does not seem to common but you never know. Good Luck on your search!

Ancestry.com does have a listing of immigrant origins, which is limited to NY passenger lists.. however, that shows ONE immigrant alone with that name, and yes, from  France.  The same is the result at familysearch.org (LDS church), which is reliable since many of their items are directly from church registers, which are a reliable source.

Another place to look is www.rootsweb.com, in this case, I also suggest their guide to researching your ancestors. You should be able to easily trace your paternal lineage back within a few generations, and you MAY descend from a man who immigrated about 1929.  Normally, I am cautious about persons with the same name being related.. but yours is very uncommon.. and you may find enough to confirm some connection to the actor.
