Suround sound?

Just bought a sony bravia tv and was wanting to buy "sony DAV D Z230 Home cinema". The only problem is that apparently it will not give full surround sound (only front speakers will work) on "normal" tv, only when playing a DVD does it use all six speakers. I was just wondering if i bought a HDMI cable would it work fully then on "normal" tv? Iv tried talking to ppl in shops such as comet & currys but ofcourse they just want to make a sale lol so if anyone can help it would be gratefully appreciated.

  1. Most DVD's have Dolby or DTS 5.1 channels therefore your system will play digital audio no probs, but the signal your tv receives is probably only 2 channel - most amplifiers WILL still play this on all speakers using Dolby Prologic - check specifications of this system.

  2. comet & currys lol

oh dear, no wonder your confused !

  3. Hi,

In general if the DVD player and home theater system is in the same package like yours probably is, then in most cases you will only get  suround sound when you play a DVD or audio CD. With regular TV you will have to listen to the TV speakers.

  4. Full dolby digital surround will only work with a direct digital signal. You will need a amp or cinema system with a optical in/out for porper surround sound. 5.1= front left and right, left and right surround and sub woffer which is the .1

  5. Depending on the age of the DAVD230 you're looking at, you may not be able to connect the TV sound, some had no facility for this and were not Sky compatable.

There is a version which has a SCART connection to enable sound to be sent FROM a TV. Once connected you have to set the sound field on the units on-screen menu to 'Dolby Pro Logic' or 'Dolby  Pro Logic II Movie' or 'Dolby Pro Logic II Music'

Before you buy, ensure it has the audio SCART IN connection, if not, leave it alone.
