Surprise checks in chess?

are there such things as surprise checks in chess?

it's supposedly when u suddenly discover opponent has checked the player without either players noticing, in which case, the one under check automatically loses.

if there are surprise checks, is it applied to all games?

  1. You are correct to raise casual play as an example since in tournaments, except for blitz, a record is kept of the play and it would be relatively easy to return to the move where the check was overlooked.

    Had you not mentioned that the attack on the king was overlooked by both players, I would have had to suppose you were asking about discovered check.  That has already been answered by another poster, and I think you have described something different.

    If play is casual, I would favor simply declaring the game a draw as both players overlooked an elementary aspect of the game and neither should get credit for the other's error as each has committed an error of equal magnitude.  Then start another game, deciding white/black by draw of a pawn.

  2. they are called discovered checks, when a piece moves and the piece behind it puts the king in check

  3. Actually by rule they have to go back to when the person was first put in check and he has to make a legal move to get out of check.

  4. If this happened in a tournament; both players would be escorted off the premises and banned from ever playing chess again !!!
