Surprise winners on the PGA Tour in 2012 season
The PGA Tour is full of surprises. Every year, a number of players pop up their heads on the prestigious tour and compete against some of the best golf players in the world.
Getting to the PGA Tour is definitely a big achievement for the players. Meanwhile, playing and finishing well is another story.
Usually, it is seen that most players struggle to make the cuts, while few succeed in performing well in specific weeks and continue to struggle afterwards.
Despite the fact that the players make it to the PGA Tour by performing well on smaller stages, like the Web.com Tour and the NGA Hooters Tour, they fail to exhibit their real performances on the bigger stage.
The reason is very obvious. Contending against some of the best players in the world is not an easy job.
This article will shed some light on the players who tasted success during the 2012 PGA Tour season, but did not do anything out of the box after collecting their victories.
That does not mean that the below-mentioned players do not have the potential to rise in future. Rather, it is to show that the 2012 PGA Tour season was simply a roller coaster year for some players.
If one is not an avid PGА Tour follower, they might hardly remember Kyle Stanley. The American got off to а solid start in the 2012 season and finished second in the Farmers Insurance Open in late January.
The very next week witnessed him record the maiden victory of his career at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and pocket around $1.1 million prize money.
Thereafter, it seemed as if he forgot how to play the sport. Following his victory, he never finished better than the tied 16th position that came at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. Moreover, he also missed the cut in nine other events.
George McNeil is another American who managed to catch the lightning in a bottle, when he participated in the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com.
At the end of the tournament, he signed his scorecard with a 16-under par 272 and earned $630,000 as prize money.
Prior to entering the tournament, his best performance came at the Sony Open, in Hawaii, where he tied for the 19th position.
Similarly, in his post-victory appearances, he recorded the best finish in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and tied for the 24th position.
John Huh, who recorded a victory this year at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, has a bright future ahead of him. He is just 22 and has already proved his worth on the PGA Tour.
However, his 2012 season campaign was more of a learning experience than a highly successful year.
Right after his victory in February, he lost his momentum and recorded only two top-10 finishes in the rest of the season so far.
Other than the abovementioned players, there are a few others who also left the golf followers in shock by earning surprise victories on the tour this year.
However, many of them failed to prove that the wins were not just flukes. Rather, they were proofs of their ability to win and remain consistent in the rest of the season.
Yet, one cannot deny the fact that no one on the PGA Tour can be taken lightly by the big guns, having a great deal of winning experience.
