Surprising loss for New York Yankees by Kansas City Royals in 2011 regular season – MLB Review
Until May 10, the Yankees had entered in eleven series and they lost four of them. Two were without result while five ended in the Yankees favour including the last series against the Texas Rangers. Yankees won the three-game series 2-1, which allowed them
to go back to Yankee Stadium to host the Kansas City Royals.
It was the first matchup of the clubs in the 2011 season. A three-game series started on Tuesday, May 10 which the Yankees won 3-1.
Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez had been on the hit list of the critics before the last two outings. Both veterans however made their way back to close down all the criticism. Jeter touched two more hits and A-Rod added a two-run single to assist Freddy Garcia
in turning the 3-1 lead into another Yankees win.
Jeter had lost his temper to receive unlimited criticism. He closed down all the chapters as he said, "When things are going well, the results are there."
A-Rod was also curious about his downfall, which forced the newspapers to intrude into his personal life. Columnists associated A-Rod’s bad performance with his supposed relationship with Hollywood star, Cameron Diaz. However, the star slugger did not pay
any attention to the rumours and critics as he kept concentrating over his performance.
"The last few days have been pretty good," Rodriguez said. “Kevin and I have spent a lot of time together, on the field, in the cage.”
By no means, was Girardi ready to take any charge over his batting line-up and he kept them going the same way. However, the Royals had read the weaknesses of the Yankees’ batting and pitching depth. They created deep trouble for the Yankees and managed
to overcome their opponents 4-3 in an eleven innings long outing on Wednesday, May 11.
Curtis continued his hitting brilliance and hammered a one-run homer and scored an RBI single, but he did not get any support from other players, including veterans.
Since then the Yankees had not played an eleven inning outing, they faced trouble in the end. Brandon Carlyle was brought into mound for the last inning, which cost the Yankees a 4-3 loss.
Burnett, who was the cause of the Yankees series loss against the Detroit Tigers, washed away all the criticism with his one-hit one-run seven innings. He struck-out six batters, but was unfortunate to not get his win.
Once again, the third outing was the series finale. However, the Yankees did not learn from their mistakes and kept on repeating the same errors.
Ivan Nova did not get any advice from Burnett and his decision cost him eight runs, ten hits and two home-runs in just three innings. It could not be reassembled as the Yankees were short of their brilliant relief pitchers and closers. Amauri Sanit was given
chance to, but he yielded three runs over four innings and provided the Royals an unsurpassed 11-5 lead until the end of the eighth inning.
Nova was not ready to accept his fault. "The errors, its part of the game," Nova said. "I just got to keep my head up, keep working hard."
Robinson Cano, Francisco Cervelli, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez struggled but it was not possible to remove the spots of the early blow. Cano and Rodriguez each launched one-run homers.
Another series loss in last ten days was indigestible for the Yankees’ fans. The pressure of facing their old rivals the Boston Red Sox was already building and the club had to get rid of it by any means.
