Surrey Golf introduces its Young Ambassadors at this year’s BMW PGA Championship
The Young Ambassadors of the Surrey Golf are all brimming with excitement for the upcoming BMW PGA Championship scheduled at the scenic Wentworth Club.
The group of youngsters will be helping with the arrangement of the event during the practice rounds and will also be sorting out the scoreboard for the same.
The Young Ambassadors were selected in February for the European Tour’s Flagship event and the initiative is part of the 40-year celebrations of the Tour.
The group of youngsters visited the coveted Wentworth Club earlier in the month and were given the necessary training by the Golf Foundation’s Junior Golf Leaders workshop.
The Young Ambassadors were enthralled by the presence of big wigs of the likes of Tim Henman, Matt Dawson, Mark Bright, John Virgo, Peter Fleming and, from television, Chris Hollins, John Inverdale, Rishi Persad, Robert Lee and Sarah Stirk on the training
day.
They were also amused to find out that European Tour’s founding father John Jacobs was also on a special visit to the course.
One of the Ambassadors, Ben White, said: “This training would help me become a better communicator and a better coach on Golf Roots projects”.
Another of the Young Ambassador Tom Shaw said, “an awesome opportunity to work alongside the world’s best players and to see the action right close up”, a view shared by Adam Hulin and Raphael Akkouche, also from the College, who said it had been “a fun
experience meeting new people”, and that the Championship would be “our time to shine”.
The event is scheduled from May 24-27 and is often touted as European Tour’s very own major tournament.
The event takes place adjacent to the Players Championship and both events are considered to be at loggerheads with each other as most of the European tour players often settle for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Since European players have been dominating the top ranks on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for a considerabe period of time,, the Players Championship is often left in the cold as the top players in the world decide to skip it.
Lee Westwood, ranked number one last year and Rory McIlroy ranked number four, opted to stay on the Wentworth event where Englishman Luke Donald won the title to surge to the top of the OWGR.
