Surrey v Northamptonshire: Clydesdale Bank 40 – Surrey’s Innings Recap
Surrey prevailed over Northamptonshire by 12 runs in a close encounter of the Clydesdale Bank 40 at the Kennington Oval, London in England on Wednesday, August 3, 2011.
Batting first, the hosts piled up 273 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 40 overs. The highlight of the innings was a magnificent batting performance from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SM-Davies-c2542, who top scored the match with 78 runs.
Northamptonshire posed a tough challenge to the opposition and came closer to the target. However, the team was restricted to 261 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their outing.
The visitors’ opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Willey-c1342 top scored the innings for his side, collecting 74 runs at the top of the order.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rory-Hamilton-Brown-c2366 opted to bat first after winning the toss. The pitch was very good for the batsmen, as there was no moisture in it. The conditions were expected to remain same for both teams throughout the day.
Hamilton-Brown and Davies opened the innings for the home team and went off to a flying start. The pair put together 62 runs for the first wicket partnership before the team’s skipper got out.
The flamboyant opener was in an attacking mood and clobbered 43 runs off 31 balls with the help of seven fours and one towering six.
Surrey’s first-drop Jason http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611 was unable to make most of the conditions, as he managed just four runs in his short stay at the crease.
However, this did not hurt the hosts by much, as Davies got tremendous support from middle-order batsman Tom Maynard. Both batsmen played exceptionally well, collecting 99 runs for the third wicket stand.
Davies got out after playing a fabulous knock of 78 runs from 68 deliveries. The wicketkeeper batsman smashed 11 boundaries in his impressive outing.
Maynard also batted extremely well, as he scored 55 runs off 52 balls before being dismissed. The seasoned campaigner smashed five boundaries in his outing.
South Africa’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zander-de-Bruyn-c98565 and Matthew Spriegel batted sensibly in the middle overs, collecting 50 runs for the fifth wicket stand. The Proteas player was unable to make a strong impression, getting out for 23 runs.
However, Spriegel played attacking cricket in the death overs, ending up with 38 runs off 33 deliveries with the help of three fours and one massive six. He got out in the 38th over of the innings, but Surrey ended up with 273 runs in the end.
