Sussex had to chase down 229 runs for victory against Surrey in a Semi-Final match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 at the Kennington Oval, London in England on Sunday, September 4, 2011.
The match was reduced to 24 overs per each side after rain had caused a delay at the start. The home team’s middle-order player Tom Maynard scored a blistering knock of 60 runs from 33 balls, guiding his side’s total to 228.
Sussex had some very good batsmen in their line-up including http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murray-Goodwin-c2040. However, the team failed to cope up with the pressure and were all out for 157 runs in 22 overs.
Only three batsmen in the visitors’ innings managed to reach double figures with the highest score of 55 from middle-order player http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Nash-c1247, who ended up with 55.
The pitch remained good throughout the match, but the Sussex batsmen failed to make most of it.
Prior and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ed-Joyce-c1417 started the innings for their side. The former failed to make an impression and was dismissed cheaply for just 7 runs. He was followed by Goodwin, who managed just 4 runs in his short stay at the wicket.
This put the visitors under a spot of bother, but the innings was put on track by Joyce and Nash. The pair collected 59 runs for the third wicket partnership before the former gave his wicket away.
The stylish opener looked impressive for his 47 runs, but would have liked to play a big innings for his side.
Sussex’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joe-Gatting-c1710 and wicketkeeper batsman Ben Brown, who score one run each in their respective outings.
Nash was batting solidly, but was brought under immense pressure with the continuous fall of wickets at the other end. He failed to bat until the end and got out after scoring 55 runs from 40 deliveries. The flamboyant batsman smashed seven boundaries in
his classy knock.
The visitors needed a miracle to bounce back into the game from that stage of the innings. It did not happen, as the team was all out for 157 runs. South Africa’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WD-Parnell-c2787 remained unbeaten on 20 runs until the end of the innings.
Surrey’s bowlers did a terrific job in the match. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Christopher-John-Schofield-c50881 was the pick of them, picking up four wickets in the match for just 22 runs.
The Final will now be played between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 and Surrey on September 17, 2011 at the Lord’s cricket ground.
