Question:

Surround Sound help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

My husband and I recently purchased a new Toshiba Regza LCD HDTV and a Sony Multi Channel AV receiver (because our old one was not compatible). For the life of us we cannot figure out how to hook everything up so we can enjoy TV in surround sound. We have the manuals but the terminology is way beyond us. Can someone please help us with a diagram or a website or something so we can figure this mess out? Much appreciated.

  1. The manual for most AV Receivers have pretty good wiring diagrams for various situations. Start there.

Since you didn't list the components you are trying to connect ... other than the TV and AV Receiver (AVR) .. it's difficult to be precise. However, the first thing to recognize is that not all TV programs are in surround sound, and those that are can only be sent to the AVR as surround sound if your TV has a digital audio output (all have inputs, not all have outputs).

The simplest connection is to connect a "digital coax output" on the TV (an orange coloured RCA jack) to an analogous input on the AVR. You would use a digital coax cable with RCA plugs on each end. You can use any RCA cable for now, but if you decide to stick with this connection get a proper cable. The digital coax cable will carry a bitstream digital signal which the AVR will decode to 5.1 surround sound and send to the surround speakers. You may have to "turn on" the output jack in the TV menu, and to get sound you will have to select the right input on the AVR (the big input selector on the front) AND make sure the AVR is set to digital.

The foregoing assumes the TV is connected directly to cable or to an antenna. If you use a cable box or satellite receiver you can take the audio direct from either to the AVR (bypassing the TV). The video signal would then go to the TV from the cable box or satellite receiver using component or HDMI cables (you don't need expensive HDMI cables ... check monoprice.com for budget cables of all types).

If you have a DVD player or other source device it would be wired to the AVR and from there to the TV. That way the video and audio are switched by the AVR source selector and the sound sent to the speakers and the video sent on to the input of the TV.

There are just too many variables at this point to get more detailed. But I hope the foregoing helps.

  2. I would contact the folks who sold you the receiver and ask them for help.  If they can't or won't help you, bring or send it back.  The big advantage from buying locally is support for installing things such as this.

As a last resort, call the tech support line for the receiver and they can probably talk you through it over the phone.

Usually, the newer stuff has an HDMI connector on the TV and the receiver, just hook that one up and then hook up your speakers.  That should get things rolling.  Also, make sure the TV selects HDMI as the input of choice when you turn it on.

If you have a cable box, then connect it into the receiver.  The same with your DVD player and VHS deck, if you still have one.

You may need to buy a cable to hook this up.  If so, buy a medium price one, not the cheapest and definitely not the most expensive.  Make sure the HDMI cable is as short as it can be and still hook properly.
