Surround sound 5.1

Question

When i watch tv on my cable HD reciever and DVDS, it only shows the front left and right speakers displayed. I went through the advance setup many times and tried to set it up the dts and i get no sound. I have it connected as follows, rca cables going from HD Dvr cable box to lcd tv and from tv to receiver a digitial fiber optic cable.
