  1. Well, if you want some good equipment at good prices, you should have a look at amazon.com, which offers the Polk 6750 5.1 speaker system, list price of $600, for about $228, plus about $25 for shipping. $155 can get you the Yamaha RX-V361BL 500 Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver.

Or, the Yamaha HTR-6040BL 5.1-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver for $218.49.

Have a look over there, and see what features some candidates have to offer your specific needs.

  2. the trouble with surround is it's tricky to mix and match unless you really know what you are doing, the speakers have to have the same voice, or it will be noticeable , and the crossovers have to be correct.

i would recommend a solid cheap 5.1 set of speakers, like the polk suggested above, also svs do superb low budget sb01 surrounds and make some of the best subs on the market.

if you can squeeze for it spend the bulk of the money on the speakers and upgrade the amp later. having said that you can get great deals on amps on ebay etc. :-)

  3. Go out and listen to as many speakers as you can. Go for speakers that cost about $300. Then you need a sub-woofer. Don't get Sony. They make great TVs but very poor speakers. Once you have speakers and a sub you need a receiver. that will run you about $250-$300. Do your research, check out some of the AV forums and see what others are getting, then go out and listen to everything you can. Learn about the equipment then make your own decision.
