Question:

Surround sound system question?

We recently got a surround sound system and we got a Yamaha thing that all the wires go into. NOw, in the manual, there is a section on connecting a DVD. it says that some wires should go to the Video out. I was wondering, why would you link a video out cable to the sound system.

This is also the same when i looked up how to connect a games system, because it is telling me to link a video cable to Yamaha sound system.

HELP PLEASE?!

  1. It is there for convenience. In most applications it cuts down on the length of cables by routing thru the receiver. And you only need to turn the TV on and turn to the appropriate video input and will never need to make a change to it afterward.

  2. Don't think of it as a sound system.  Home theater receivers process video for ease of switching between components.

For example, you have a cable box, a dvd player, and an Xbox.  The audio and video goes into the receiver and then is sent to the tv.  Now all you have to do, is switch the input on the receiver, and you're getting the sound AND video from the component you want.  If you had just the sound hooked up to the receiver and the video connected to the tv, you'd have to switch inputs on the receiver AND the tv...much more complicated.

So as you can see...this confusion is actually a convenience!  Woohoo!
