Surveillance post 9/11?

Which theoretical perspectives account for the intensification of surveillance (especially since 9/11)

ie. which academic perspectives in sociology/criminology explain the increase in surveillance since 9/11.

What we are experiencing now is that "Big Brother" utilizes all of the know-how which is now available, simply in order to keep a check on people who might -- today or in the future -- cause problems to the sitting regime.
