  1. geldings/

are more lovy dovy and are easier to control.

plus they dont go into season.

  2. absolutely don't care either way; have had great horses that were mares and great horses that were geldings.  mares are more grouchy but i don't mind.  all i would try to stay away from would be stallions.  no thanks.

  3. i prefer mares ^^ i think they have more colorful personalities. my appy can be a handful, but it's okay. i think she's more fun to work with than geldings :) i think they're smarter too. more tricks XD

  4. Mares. . . they may seem like more trouble to most but once you win over a mare's heart she will give you everything she has.

  5. mares I only have few geldings i love mares

  6. Mares are very smart, smarter than Geldings in my opinion. But they can also have an attitude and be stubborn and difficult to work with.

Most geldings tend to be pretty easy going in a dopey puppy dog sort of way. I have seen WAY more geldings get hurt doing stupid things than mares.

I have a gelding because I love the puppy-dog personality and great work ethic. I don't know if he'd be like that if he was a mare or not.

  7. I have had a mare for 26 years and love every minute of it.   She is moody and unpredictable.  She acts like she is a spring chicken.  But I have friends that swear by geldings.

Recently I purchased a gelding.  He is genuinly predictable.  He hasn't shown any moodiness yet.  I must say that now that I'm grown."40", It is much nicer to  know how my ride is going to go.

So my answer is if your are young and up to the challenge, a mare makes it more exciting.  Otherwise get a gelding.  He is a sure thing.

  8. I would choose a mare over a gelding any day. I think that they are more willing then geldings are to do certian tasks, and I have never owned a mare that was not top in what they have done. They seem to have that extra get out there and "go" energy that most geldings seem to lack.

  9. I've delt with both, own a gelding and ride multiple mares. My gelding is prob. the worst example of the sweet geldings, but I do prefer geldings.

Why? Because the mares I've delt with are always moody during their heat cycle and it gets really annoying. I've only delt with 3 bad geldings, 2 were proud cut and one is my own who is previously abused.

  10. Geldings, just because I find it easier to connect with guys :p

  11. Mares :D

    Mares :D

    AND MARES

  12. Mare. I have a nice, well-bred  mannerly Quarter horse mare that, if I would like something from her someday before I retire her(which I plan on doing), I can produce it myself and keep her progeny with me and my family. And I don't have to question where the foal came from, if it's ever sustained an injury, etc that some horse sellers will hide from a buyer.

You can't do such with a gelding-he could be a great horse and more predictable concerning overall calmness (geldings can be rotten, tho, too-I have one who'll drink Cherry Coke from the glass right with ya!), but you're done when he's gone-you're back to square one.

  13. I would probably prefer Mares even though they get moody at some times. Generally... I like them better because you don't have to do the messy and stinky job of cleaning a gelding's sheath (though I know you will still have to clean the mare's teats and stuff).

Geldings are good BUT there's the stinky job (you girls better make sure your boyfriends are nowhere to be seen when you clean your gelding's sheath! lol j/k) of cleaning the sheath. Unless you have enough money to pay a vet to do it for you...

  14. i lyk mares because even though they can be moody the right one can be friendly lyk my mare.

  15. I would pefer Geldings.  They are better laid back.

  16. I prefer geldings because they usually arent crazed over mares or stallions! But there is NOTHING wrong with mares!

  17. Geldings!

My gelding is the awesomest thing ever! I find mares to have too many "off" days.

  18. GELDINGS.

    best answer?

  19. I prefer geldings over mares as a regular riding horse because I prefer their temperament. Most have dispositions that match mine. Also, geldings, to me, seem to be more people horses not so worried about the other horses and their place in the herd ect.

Also, I've had many mares that I really loved and loved working with but even the best of them had some bad days that seemed to be hormone related. Not their fault just the way it is.

A gelding can be counted on to be the same every single day, 365 days per year.

  20. i only use geldings on my ranch because they are more even headed than mares and dont have a tedancy to over work the other livestock.

  21. I like the personality and nature of a mare. There is just something about them. I think they are multi faceted!

  22. This all depends on the individual horse, I've had some mares that were the grouchiest things you'd ever set eyes on, and then I have a few, one in particular who is the NICEST animal in the world, she is a love and cuddle bug, loves to be kissed, NEVER pins an ear at anyone and will let the smallest child handle her, yet she'll perform a flawless 70% dressage test at Devon! She is superb because she gives me her whole heart....tho the grouchy mares that I have have some big jumps in them because they arnt intimidated.

I love my geldings, that are dolls, and I love the stallions and colts as well, as long as they are managed correctly, I have no issues with them.

I'd say again it depends on each horse.

  23. geldings most are more even tempered

  24. Mares..because from my experience, geldings cause trouble with each other because they have the stallion-like behavior and fight each other when put with mares.

  25. Mare. I like them to think.

  26. Mares over geldings. Geldings are great but I like to be tested, so a mare thats always challenging me, I will love. For the past 5 years I just started realy working with studs, with an expierence stud horse trainer. I love the fact I can't turn my back on them. But yeah a mare over a gelding. For training, geldings for shows, rodeo's, and work. They are steady and no trouble.

  27. I definitely prefer geldings. All the horses i have ever leased or owned have been geldings. I love there personality's and you don't have to deal with them going in to heat. I haven't met to many mares i liked. The last mare i rode took off with me to a barn with stallions while riding with a group of my friends lol. I am a good rider and got her to stop but she was calling and rearing and gigging trying to get to those boys. haha that was a fun ride. My friend had to pony me past that barn cause my mare was going nuts haha.

  28. Although many would disagree, I prefer mares. I like their personalities..!
