Spit is absolutely imperative.... even a spray bottle won't substitute... not as slippery...

as for the polish , if your doint the mantle piece , you dont need spit , if your doing shoes , then a bit of spit helps the polish :)

Survey: Yes, it is true that you need a little spit with the polish to have a nice shine, especially when it comes to shining a pair of combat boots. This comes from my 21 years with the US Army.
