The Elefanti patron has stated that the club’s target of 50 points in the last season backfired in the closing stages, and has revealed that he will set no benchmark for the team this year.
President Antonino Pulvirenti has stressed that Catania will enter the 2012-13 Serie A campaign with a view to do their best, and has stated that the club will have no points tally to hit in the upcoming season.
The Elephants were in the contention of a Europa League spot in the last campaign, but a dismal run of just one win from their last ten matches saw an end to the dream.
However, the Rossazzurri still finished their year at the eleventh spot in the league points table, with a club record of 48 points.
Pulvirenti stated that the idea of setting a points target did not work out well for the team last time, as the players dropped their guard when they were nearing their target of 50 points.
The Elefanti chief insisted that they will not limit their next campaign with any benchmark of points, and stated that their main target will be to ensure survival in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926’s top flight.
While talking to the press, the Catania patron said:
“This year I will not fix any target. Last year the target of 50 points proved to be a limit - when we were about to get there we dropped. But still, the main objective always remains to avoid relegation.”
The Elephants will have new challenges in the new season after their manager Vincenzo Montella opted to move to Fiorentina, and following the departure of a talented striker who was supposed to return to the outfit following the termination of loan-agreement at AC Milan.
Pulvirenti stated that Maxi Lopez’s loan-move to Sampdoria has a lot to do with the player’s desire to take his leave from Catania, and insisted that he does not want players in his team that do not want to stay.
“At Catania, we only want players who are interested in staying and he wanted another team, so we separated. Catania will find someone else.” He added.
