What are some ways to survive the next great depression? Which countries would be good to move to? What are good organizations to join that provide housing (such as the military and some parts of the Americorps)? What about taking out a loan and opening a grocery store that sells food and items in bulk?

  1. Stop running your life around money and do what you enjoy.

Then a great depression will be irelevant.

  2. in the USA nebraska/iowa/kansas

small farm if you can find one

  3. If you are describing something like the original great depression happening,  i don't believe that is likely AT ALL . People always underestimate the extent of the original Great Depression .  There would be no one to buy your groceries if it was actually on that scale. If it was on that scale then it would also effect more than one  developed country, and today,  this would be even more the case, because countries are more interdependent than they have ever been.

if it was actually on that scale, the best thing you could do is move to a farm and grow your own food with a stockpile of canned food just in case your crops don't do as well as you expected.

As for the actual economic hard times that may come in the future, and which will certainly not be on the level of the Great Depression, invest in commodities long term.

  4. The next great depression will be worse than the Great Depression of the 30's. If that is any indication, the value of the dollar and the level of debts are worse than they were in 1929. People had work ethics back then, and the rudimentary skills to survive, like growing a garden, canning food, hunting, sewing, etc.

Your best bet is to get out of debt as fast as you can. Hold on to your job, even if it sucks. Don't buy anything you don't need. Save your money. This is going to be a worldwide catastrophe, so the grass isn't going to be any greener in another country. You don't want language barriers or having to deal with a different culture in these difficult times. Do not take any loan to open a business.

Crime rate will soar, and government and municipal services will shrink. Less policemen, less firefighters, less road maintenance, less food inspectors. Deseases, charities and soup kitchens will proliferate.

Remain in good health by eating healthy and exercising. Get some ammunitions or a guard dog to protect yourself. Stockpile food. If possible, grow your own vegetables. Learn how to can. Plan for a year of supplies. This may prevent you and your family from starving. Don't listen to so called financial experts as to how to invest your money. While it may be good to have some gold, you can't eat a gold coin so don't get caught up .

  5. I think the best way to get through such a situation is to have a job in a recession/depression proof field.  Government and medical come readily to mind.  No matter how bad things get financially, the government will keep going.  Of course, if things progress beyond an economic downturn, and the revolution finally comes, those of us with public-sector jobs might be in trouble.  However, people will continue to get sick, die, have babies, etc. so the medical field (which is currently booming) is probably your best bet.

As the first poster mentioned, if there is a depression (like the Great Depression) it would affect the entire world.  Remember, it was his action during the depression (helping to create jobs in Germany by building the Autobahn) that brought Hitler into power.  Thus, I don't think moving to another country would help you much.

As you know, AmeriCorps is an excellent option, but there IS a two year term limit.
