Susannah Leydon, Emma Rodgers leap forward to quarter-finals of Victorian International 2012
Women’s Doubles campaigners Susannah Leydon Davis-Emma Rodgers of New Zealand reserved a quarter-final seat in Li Ning Victorian International by toppling Louisa Ma-Natasha Sharp on June 29, 2012.
This was a first round match that kept contestants busy for 36 minutes before ending with 21-14, 14-21 and 21-9.
Both teams played with great precision and earned a lot of praise for a wonderful show but the local team of Louisa Ma-Natasha Sharp could not lift the burden of expectations and knelt down in crucial segments.
On the other hand, the victorious duo silenced the local crowd by thundering in first and final set of match.
The Kiwi shuttlers showed their intentions straight away in opening game when they swiftly registered a respectable total of 6-2.
They did not lose this rhythm all the way to half time and placed a respectable margin of 11-6 before mid-game break.
They lost focus in third quarter of the set and the opposing team narrowed the gap with 15-13 but they bagged six out of ending seven points to finish this race with a superior margin of 21-14.
Louisa Ma and Natasha Sharp saved their honour to some extent by clinching the following game in an impressive manner.
This time they did not waste time and launched an intensive attack to get into commanding position. They established an unassailable lead with 7-2 total and relished this upper hand until half time.
The twosome of Susannah Leydon and Emma Rodgers put decent fight after 5-11 and built pressure by snatching five points without any interruption.
They tried their best to oust the opponents but could not hit the mark due to below par performance in last moments. They lost second set with 14-21 score on the board.
However, the Australians turned abysmal chasers in following game as they could not repeat their performance of the previous set.
The Kiwi pair made amends in the decider and sealed a splendid win with huge difference of 12 points in decisive figure of 21-9.
Now the real challenge awaits them in round of eight where they will be up against second seed duo Nurvita Hanadia Keshya-Devi Tika Permatasari of Indonesia.
