Okay so I'm sure this sounds like a dumb question. I've only ever had a california roll and though I do like japanese cuisine I've never tried sushi, sashimi or Nigri sushi. My question is what are the differences. I'm not to keen on the idea of eating raw fish but I'll try it at least once any recommendations? Also are their any rolls made only with veggies?

thanks

  1. Sushi is raw fish on top of a little mound of rice ... sashimi is just the sliced fish, with no rice (a much better "buy" and healthier than all the rice).  I assume Nigri sushi is sushi wrapped with seaweed.   Tuna is usually the sushi that most beginners try:)  It's very mild.  My favorite though is octopus sashimi:)  Not a very strong flavor, and chewy, but I love it!  You could also try a California roll with eel to start.  It has a wonderful sauce on top:)   Good sushi will actually not be as "fishy" as cooked fish, and have no smell.  I'd stay away from sea urchin or salmon skin to start, though.

  2. Sushi actually refers to the rice. there are many kinds of sushi, including california roll (cooked crab and avocado). Nigri sushi is the type where a piece of raw fish is placed on top of a little ball of rice.

Sashimi refers to the raw fish.  All are great.  I love big eye tuna sushi roll.
