  1. regular sushi is the big chunks of fish, usually laid on top of rice-the rolls are the smaller things, they are usually a small peice of fish and sometimes a vegetable, rolled up in seaweed and rice, then cut up

  2. A roll is exactly what it sounds like- a roll. Sushi chefs will roll up crab, sushi, vegetables, whatever the insides are supposed to be, with rice and seaweed. Then it's cut into smaller pieces. Google "california roll" and look at pictures.

  3. Japanese sushi are not only the oval shaped sushi, nigiri. Other popular kinds of sushi are maki-zushi.

Maki-zushi are sushi rolls which are rolled in nori (dried seaweed). Since maki-zushi are wrapped by nori, they are also called nori-maki. Maki means rolling in Japanese.

There are many kinds of sushi rolls, depending on the fillings. Some common sushi rolls in Japan are tekka-maki (raw tuna rolls), kappa-maki (cucumber rolls), and futo-maki (thick rolls) which include seasoned kampyo (gourd strips), denbu (sweet powder), sweet omelet, cucumber, and more.

  4. Sushi is used to refer to both the small seaweed/rice rolls as well as the rice fingers with raw fish on top.  The really big ones (if I'm understanding correctly what you're meaning) are called "hand-rolls"; these are the same ingredients as the smaller sushi rolls, just in a larger, easier to carry package. :)  I put a link to the everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about... site below. :)
