  1. why mess with raw fish? bing on the sake!!!!

  2. I just did the same thing! I bought some nice sushi plates from The Christmas Tree Shop, a buck a piece. Picked up some Bamboo placemats from Bed, Bath & Beyond's clearance table, also just a buck. Asked a local Chinese food joint for a few extra chop sticks the last time I went and they gave me plenty. I arranged the sushi in various square bowls. Everything looked great! Served sushi, seaweed salad, steamed rice and a green bean and brocolli dish with garlic sauce. Oh yeah, I asked the local Table and Vine store for their best Japanese beer and bought some plum wine (with the plums in it) to serve as well. I've never had so many compliments.

  3. I know why you want inexpensive decorating ideas:)  The sushi will be costing PLENTY!   Serve some of the sushi in large wooden boats, or on big plastic leaves ....   Get some tall branches with cherry blossoms on them and stick 1 or 2 in vases (minimal).  You can get fake ones at Michael's, and I saw fresh ones at the grocery flower dept. yesterday ....   A small zen-like table fountain would be nice, with some smooth pebbles around it ....   A bonzai tree for a centerpiece would be nice (yes, pricey, but you'd always have it) ....

Don't forget salad ...  If you can't get seaweed salad (LOVE it) from the sushi place, or seafood salad, make one with greens, cucumbers, green onions & a light vignarette dressing ...

Lighter desserts too:  Maybe lemon sorbet (Hagen Daz is good) with some nice Pepperidge Farm cookies  ... or an Angel Food cake with whipped cream and sliced strawberries.....

you might also want some Plum wine (I like mine on ice)
