Sushil Kumar injured for the upcoming Asian Games
The Indian professional wrestler Sushil Kumar who won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi has decided to miss next month’s Asian Games to be held in China as a result of his shoulder injury.
Kumar, who captured a gold medal in the 66kg category, suffered an injury while competing at the World Tournaments back in September. The twenty seven year old Kumar also won a bronze medal in the Men's 66kg Freestyle Wrestling
competition at the Olympic Games in Beijing back in 2008. The Delhi resident also got the better of Leonid Spiridonov from Kazakhstan in the repechage round to bag a bronze at the Olympic Games. It was the third medal for his country at the Olympics after
Abhinav Bindra, a shooter from India grabbed the first ever individual Olympic gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle competition and Vijender Kumar captured bronze in boxing event for India.
Kumar, while talking to the media regarding his current injury said on Friday that he is not feeling well at the moment and needs some break to recover his health and body.
"I am also having pain in the neck and I seriously need some time off. After the hard World tournament, I played in the Commonwealth event. I did not get much time to recover. It was decided that I would be given a break after
the Commonwealth Games to get fully fit for the Olympic qualifiers," explained Sushil on Friday.
However, an official announcement confirming his withdrawal from the upcoming Asian Games will be made after the federation meets on Saturday.
The world champion further added, "Everything has been done. It is just a formal announcement on Saturday. Peaking on three occasions in a year and giving the best in all events is really a tough task, but I have delivered and
now want some rest.”
Pradeep Kumar will participate in place of Sushil in next month’s Asian Games to be contested in Guangzhou.
When asked about his health, the professional wrestler from India said that he will get a clear picture once the reports will come on Saturday.
Sushil has captured gold medals in all three major events namely World, Asian as well as Commonwealth Games in 2010 and is definitely looking to continue his excellent form after taking some rest for the remaining season.
