Suspended tight end, Fred Davis, receives franchise tag from Washington Redskins – NFL News
Washington Redskins on Friday, March 2, 2012, placed their franchise tag on tight end, Fred Davis, who was set to become a free agent this month after his contract expired with the end of the last National Football League (NFL) season.
He is expected to receive a little over $5 million in 2012 and if the player decides to join any other franchise that offers him more money, Redskins will be compensated with two first-round draft picks.
Davis, who was selected by Redskins in the 2008 NFL drafts, missed the last four games of the recently concluded season as he was suspended by the league over the violation of its substance abuse policy.
Despite Davis’ suspension, Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, expressed faith in the player and hoped that he would not repeat such blunder again.
Shanahan said of the player in January:
“Fred made a mistake. We sat down and talked about his mistake. I do feel very good about Fred as a person.”
The head coach added:
“I like the way he worked, I like his attitude. I like his development over the last year-and-a-half since I’ve been here. I think he’s had a complete change in the way he handles himself off the field, to preparing himself to be a consummate pro, to working
out, and hopefully the mistake won’t happen that he made this year.”
In the 12 games Davis played, he gained 796 yards on 59 receptions for three touchdowns with a commendable average of 13.5 yards per reception.
Meanwhile, Redskins have also tendered a contract to guard, Kory Lichtensteiger, who could only play five games in the recently concluded season.
Lichtensteiger, a free but restricted agent, can be claimed off the free agency by any other team of the league, but Redskins still have an option of bringing him back to the team.
Furthermore, kicker, Graham Gano, who is with the franchise for the last three years after starting his professional football career in 2009, has been made exclusive rights free agent.
By doing so, Redskins only need to offer Gano a contract to ensure his stay with the franchise for at least the next season.
