Sussex 2nd XI defeated the Hampshire 2nd XI by seven wickets and two balls remaining in a match of the Second Eleven Trophy at The Rose Bowl, Southampton in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Tuesday, August 9, 2011.
The hosts managed 226 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 40 overs. The team’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Benny-Howell-c1147 was the top scorer of the innings with 67 runs, but the effort went in vain.
Sussex 2nd XI did not lose many wickets, but had to bat until the last over of the innings in order to reach the target. The team’s opening batsman Callum Jackson top scored the innings and the match with an unbeaten 106 runs.
Hampshire 2nd XI had decided to bat first after winning the toss. The pitch was good for the batsmen, but was expected to get slower with the passage of time.
The start to the hosts’ innings was not an ideal one, losing opening batsman Tim Ravenscroft early. He was dismissed in the very first over of the innings without troubling the scorers.

Simon Steele was the next man to be dismissed in the innings. He was unable to carry onto the start, getting out for 16 runs. He was followed by Howell, who batted really well for his 67 runs off 88 balls with the help of six fours and a couple of sixes.
There was no significant impression from the lower-order of the home team, as they were restricted to 226/8 at the end of the innings.
The visitors’ new ball bowler http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ollie-Rayner-c2139 did a decent job, picking up two wickets for 35 runs in his spell.
Sussex 2nd XI were given a fabulous start by their openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Matt-Machan-c1921 and Jackson, as the pair collected 76 runs for the first wicket partnership. The former played aggressively and scored a run-a-ball 50 runs before being dismissed.
The fall of wicket did not cause many problems for the visitors, as Jackson and wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andy-Hodd-c1047 collected 111 runs for the second wicket partnership.
Hodd missed out on a half-century by 10 runs, getting out for 40 runs off 46 deliveries. He was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Paul-Harrison-c2165 Finch, who managed just 5 runs in his shosrt stay at the crease.
However, Jackson did not give his wicket away and guided his side to victory with an unbeaten 106 runs from 121 balls. He struck 12 boundaries in his impressive outing.
Hampshire 2nd XI’s Myburgh picked up one wicket in the match, but failed to restrict the opposition from winning the game.
