Sussex and Oxford MCCU match ended in a draw
The three-day game of the Marylebone Club University Matches between Oxford MCCU and Sussex ended in a draw, at The Parks, Oxford in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Friday, May 27th, 2011. The visitors scored 462 and 70/1 in both their innings whereas Oxford MCCU
batted just once in the match, scoring 231 runs.
The pitch was very good for batting due to which the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Will-Beer-c2792, decided to bat first after winning the toss. He expected his team to bat once in the match and pile a massive first innings total.
Sussex’s openers, Ben Brown and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joe-Gatting-c1710, didn’t disappoint their captain and gave a solid start to the team. The pair batted aggressively and scored runs at more than run-a-ball. They peppered the bowlers to all parts of the park and collected 224 runs
for the first wicket partnership.
Gatting’s innings came to an end after a gutsy century. He scored 106 runs off just 102 deliveries, out of which 88 came from boundaries. His opening partner, Brown, also scored the same number of runs in boundaries and top scored the Sussex innings with
112 runs from 113 balls.
Apart from the openers, middle-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Matt-Machan-c1921, was also in good form, scoring 99 runs for his side. He would have liked to score a ton, but just fell one run short.
The home team’s bowlers were unable to control the flow of runs, but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Henry-Childs-c68031 Ellison bowled well, picking up three wickets, before the declaration came from Sussex.
Oxford MCCU didn’t have many options other than playing for survival. Their batsmen consumed too many balls for their runs, which saw the match ending in a draw.
None of the home team’s batsman was able to take his score past 50. The top score of the innings came from middle-order player, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Williams-c98034, who
ended up with 41 runs. He was unfortunate to be run-out after settling down at the crease.
Other then these two batsmen, five players managed to score in twenties, but none were able to carry onto make a big impression.
The Sussex skipper was the best bowler for his side, as he took three wickets in the innings. He also did a good job with the bat earlier, scoring 33 runs.
The visitors had to come out to bat just for a few overs before the end of play and they started the innings with, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andy-Hodd-c1047. The latter got out after adding just 16 runs to the total, but Vincent remained unbeaten on 36 from 22 balls. The
other not-out batsman was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ollie-Rayner-c2139, who scored nine runs.
The lone wicket to fall in the Sussex second innings was taken by, Marc Milligan.
