Sussex trail by 262 runs with nine wickets remaining in a match of the County Championship Division One against Durham, at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013. The hosts scored 292 runs in their first innings before getting all-out and managed
to take one wicket in the Sussex innings, before close of play on day-one.
Durham’s captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dale-Benkenstein-c1302 elected to bat first after winning the toss, as the conditions were good for batting. His team responded well with a decent first innings total against the opposition.
The hosts were given an aggressive start by opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Di-Venuto-c1954. The flamboyant batsman scored 30 runs off just 33 balls with the help of five fours, but lost his wicket after getting a good start.
Di Venuto’s opening partner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gordon-Muchall-c1499 in the middle and the pair batted sensibly, guiding their team to a dominant position. They put together 129 runs for the second wicket, taking their team’s total to 173. It seemed
as if the home team would post a massive total in their first outing, but the middle-order batsmen failed to make most of the platform laid by their top-three.
Muchall played brilliantly for his 74 runs off 119 balls. He struck 13 fours in his innings, but would have liked to carry on and make a big one for his team. However, he failed to do so and Sussex bounced back into the match.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ben-Stokes-c1142, who managed 21 runs before being dismissed.
Wickets kept on falling on regular intervals, as Durham’s captain was sent back to the pavilion after adding 10 runs to the total. Wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Richardson-c1964 scored just two runs in his short stay at the crease whereas middle-order batsman Ian
Blackwell got out for 19.
However, a quick fire 35 runs off 30 balls from lower-order batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scott-Borthwick-c2466 guided the team’s total close to 300. He smashed seven fours in his cameo innings.
Left-arm spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Amjad-Khan-c44095 also bowled nicely, for his three scalps.
The visitors had to bat just 13 overs in the day, but they were unable to get a good start. Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Wells-c1859 made sure that they didn’t make any mistakes in
the remaining day. They were unbeaten on 19 and seven respectively, when the day was called-off by the umpires.
