Sussex defeat Hampshire by five wickets: County Championship Division One – Sussex’s Second Innings Recap
Sussex had to chase down 233 runs for victory against Hampshire in a match of the County Championship Division One, at the County Ground, Hove in England, on Thursday, July 14, 2011.
Although the hosts had a very good batting line-up, they needed to bat sensibly in order to achieve the target. This was exactly what happened in the game, as the team reached the required total, losing just five batsmen.
Star http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Matthew-James-Prior-c75192, led the run chase for the hosts, as he remained unbeaten on 97 in the end. He would have liked to score three more runs for his century, but winning the game was more important for the veteran player.
There wasn’t a http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Griffith-c919 change in the playing conditions, but the pitch had become easier for the batsmen compared to the previous three days. The spinners were getting some turn, but it was a little too slow to cause many problems for the batsmen.
Sussex’s start was not an ideal one, as they lost a couple of wickets early. Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ed-Joyce-c1417 was the first man to be dismissed in the innings after adding 16 runs to the total from 38 balls. He looked solid in the middle, but got a good one from the opposition’s
captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852 opener.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Danny-Briggs-c1315, who made no mistake.
The home team’s captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murray-Goodwin-c2040 was unable to make an impression in the second innings and was dismissed cheaply for four. His team was in somewhat trouble at that stage, being 65/3.
Prior and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Darren-Wells-c73269 put together 40 runs for the fourth wicket partnership, giving some momentum to their team. The latter was unable to carry onto the start he got to his innings and was sent back to the pavilion after collecting 34 runs with the help
of five boundaries.
Hampshire would have sniffed a chance of victory after the fourth wicket fell in the hosts’ innings. However, a brilliant 81-run stand between Prior and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-John-Hodd-c44440 took the game away from the opposition.
Hodd got out after scoring 25 runs, but did his job. No wicket fell in the Sussex innings after that, as the keeper batsman and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Oliver-Philip-Rayner-c80200 put together an unbeaten 49, guiding their side to victory. They scored 97 and 22 in their respective outings.
Danny Briggs tried his best to win the match for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789, but his effort went in vain. He picked up three wickets in the innings, but lacked support from the other end.
