Surrey 124 v Sussex 81/2 (23.0 ov) - Sussex trail by 43 runs with 8 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
Cricket Field Road Ground, Horsham: On the first day of play in the four-day match between Sussex and Surrey, Sussex now trail by 43 runs with eight wickets in hand in their first innings at stumps on June 06, 2012.
After winning the toss, Sussex chose to field first, giving their bowlers a first go at the batsmen in order to restrict the opposition on a small total.
The side made early inroads by grabbing their first wicket with 19 runs on the board as Surrey opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611 fell after scoring 11 runs.
Then with 22 runs on the board, the side suffered the loss of their second wicket with MR Ramprakash perishing on the penultimate delivery of the 10th over after scoring an innings of eight runs.
Ten runs later another wicket fell when number-three batsman Z de Bruyn was caught by Yardy after scoring only five runs.
In a matter of minutes a couple of more wickets fell, sending home the top-order without letting anyone score in double figures except for JJ Roy.
After a disastrous start, TL Maynard and GJ Batty took it upon themselves to steer their side out of rough waters.
However, the partnership failed to prosper long enough to cause a serious damage as with 52 runs on the board Maynard was removed after scoring 17 runs.
Batty then forged another potent partnership with J Lewis which came to an end with 96 runs on the board as Batty departed after bolstering an innings of 32 runs.
A run later, Lewis also departed with an innings of 14 runs to his name. This greatly affected the run rate as the side did not have anyone left in the remainder of the batting line-up to clobber a big innings.
Consequently the side faltered after posting 124 runs on the board with M Kartik unbeaten on 23 runs.
Sussex then faced 23 overs as they amassed 81 runs for the loss of two wickets by the end of the day’s play.
