Suzy Whaley says her mother encouraged her to join pro golf
Suzy Whaley, who played briefly on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour, recently said that her mother played the most important part in her efforts to become a professional player.
Connecticut native Whaley, who played on the LPGA Tour for years, talked to the media and recounted her experience of golf.
She said that she has been a golf enthusiast right from the start and she still thinks that her mother was the one who encouraged her to start her career.
Whaley is the only female golfer in 58 years, who had the opportunity to find a place in a PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour tournament.
She qualified for the Tour after grabbing a title at the 2002 Connecticut Section PGA Championship.
Whaley had been an avid swimmer before joining professional golf and spent most of her time practicing in pools.
She did not pay much attention golf until she saw some of her friends taking golf more seriously than anything else.
She said that in addition to her mother, her friends also became a source of inspiration for her. She said that she would witness her friends shooting balls on the practice range, which triggered interest about the sport in her.
Now that she no longer plays on the LPGA Tour, she spends most of her time mentoring young kids wanting to learn quality golf.
She recounted how her mother would teach her basic golf skills on the practice range.
Whaley is going to oversee the First Tee facility, scheduled to start from May 19, at the TPC River Highland.
The golf prodigy will give lessons to teens. Whaley said that she is thrilled to teach rising kids golf skills, as she loves to promote golf.
"I'm looking to get 1,000 girls in attendance that day and really promote the message of golf. If girls can learn in a non-threatening, non-intimidating atmosphere, I welcome them to come," Whaley said.
She said that ever since she quit playing pro golf, her biggest aim has been to coach girls. "It's just about getting girls to understand that other girls play golf and love it. I want to get that message out there.
"I'm a mom as well as a PGA golf professional, and I'm extremely passionate about girls and golf and giving them the opportunities in golf that are so incredible and what made me fall in love with the sport".
