Svein Tuft wins fourth stage and Francisco Mancebo takes overall lead in 2011 Tour of Beauce
SpiderTech p/b C10 team’s Svein Tuft won the fourth stage of 2011 Tour of Beauce in Saint-Rene on Friday, June 17. Francisco Mancebo retained his overall leader’s yellow jersey.
Canadian road bicycle racer, Svein, took a total of 25 minutes and 26 seconds to cover a distance of 20 kilometres.
Michael Freiberg of the V Australia team was the runner-up with 6 seconds behind Svein. UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling team’s Scott Zwizanski finished in the third spot with a difference of 10 seconds.
After winning the stage, Tuft said, "We have been hunting for a win and have been so close, We are very excited about it. But, for us the race is just starting. We have several riders in the top of the overall classification and that is exactly what we wanted going into the last two stages."
Previously, Tuft won the National Time Trial Cycling Champion and overall second spot in Tour of Denmark in 2010. He also took first prologue Eneco Tour.
The overall race leader, Mancebo finished the time trial in the fifth spot with a difference of 29 seconds.
A group of four riders including Svein Tuft (Spidertech Powered), Michael Freiberg (Australia), Scott Zwizanski (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) and Phillip Gaimon made their first breakaway. All of them built lead of few seconds over the peloton.
Phillip Gaimon maintained his pace, but he failed to catch the other three cyclists. Michael launched the attack in the final kilometres, but Svein had good legs so with the help of his team he crossed the finish-line first, ahead of other cyclists.
Francisco Mancebo took the eoverall standings with a timing of 12 hours, 28 minutes and 28 seconds. Bernardo Colex was the runner-up with 24 seconds and Benjamin King finished third with 1 minute and 11 seconds behind the Spanish.
Mancebo said, "My time is one minute less than last year in the Beauce region, he said. Unlike 2010, I used a bike against the clock instead of a road bike. On the more rugged path, I won three against the clock this year. "
The stage winner, Tuft grabbed the sixth spot with a difference of 1 minutes and 16 seconds.
The next stage will start in Quebec City and all riders will cover the distance of 125.1 kilometres.
