Sven Goran-Eriksson looks set to sign Darius Vassell
New manager Sven Goran-Eriksson is looking to make Darius Vassell his third signing at Leicester City.
Vassell is a free agent after he parted company with Ankaragucu in the Turkish league and Eriksson now appears to be interested in securing the services of the former England international.
The Swede has worked with Vassell during his time at Manchester City, but the striker was forced to leave the club after new owners took over Manchester City and signed the likes of Robiniho, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz.
Eriksson has already signed Kyle Naughton and Curtis Davies on loan and Vassell will be asked to provide the Foxes with goals.
The 30-year-old started his career with Aston Villa and moved to Manchester City in 2005 as part of a £2m deal.
The striker made 20 appearances for England and scored six goals for his country. However, after Eriksson’s departure from Manchester City, Vassell featured far less frequently and his career has been on a downward spiral ever since.
His spell at Ankaragucu was not successful and Vassell will see a move to Leicester as a make or break time in his career.
The striker will hope that he can resurrect his fortunes and score some important goals for his new club.
Eriksson will also hope that he can inspire the striker to reproduce the form that saw him amass 20 England caps.
Eriksson said, "[He will bring] pace, experience and score goals. He has been at this level and higher for many years.”
The new Leicester manager believes that the player could be a valuable asset to the Foxes and added, "He is only 30 and should be able to play for many more years.”
Leicester have had a poor start to the season and Eriksson has been appointed to change the clubs fortunes.
They are currently in the relegation zone while their new owners have demanded that the club can gain promotion to the Premier League this season.
