Sven Nys in no mood to retire
Sven Nys has decided to continue his splendid form and has no intentions of retiring as of now, especially after his superb performance during the UCI World Cup round 6 where he outsprinted some of the top cyclo-cross riders.
The 36-year-old has enjoyed a splendid career and is considered as one of the top cross riders across the world.
“Until a month ago, I was sure that I would quit in March 2014. It was clear. I knew what I wanted to do with my future. But now I really don’t know,” Nys told Sporza.
“It’s strange because I was at peace with the idea that I was stopping. But I get that question every now and then and it makes me insecure”.
“It’s dangerous to say that you will keep racing at a time when everything is going well. But if I continue, I will have the same motivation and keep giving everything to the last day,” he concluded.
His most recent win at Zolder was definitely one of his best performances as he outsprinted the in-form Niels Albert, Zdenek Stybar, Radomir Simunek and Kevin Pauwels.
The Belgian took a little over an hour to cross the finish-line with a convincing 16 seconds margin over Niels Albert of Team BKCP-Powerplus.
Zdenek Stybar of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Radomir Simunek of Team BKCP-Powerplus and Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor achieved the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
The 36-year-old’s 2012 performances include the World Cup victories at the Koksijde, Roubaix, Heusden-Zolder along with Superprestige wins in Ruddervoorde, Zonhoven, Hamme-Zogge, Gavere 2012.
Nys also succeeded at the Oudenaarde, Hasselt along with other victories at the Neerpelt, Kalmthout, Overijse and Sint-Niklaas 2012.
He currently leads the Elite Men World Cup standings after six rounds with a total number of 415 points in his bag while Niels Albert of Team BKCP-Powerplus and Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor securing the second and the third positions with 415 and 389
points respectively.
Klaas Vantornout of Team Sunweb-Revor (301 points), Lars Van Der Haar of Team Rabobank Giant (291 points), Bart Aernouts of Team AA Drink (290 points) and Tom Meeusen of Team Telenet-Fidea (276 points) achieved the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh positions
in the respective order.
