Sven Nys might not ride the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships any more
Sven Nys could not justify his performance with the7th place finish at the Cyclo-cross World Championships in Koksijde, Belgium. The cyclist has revealed that he might pull the plug on the event for the final two years of his career.
The Belgian tried his best but could not match the likes of his fellow citizen, Niels Albert, who won the race in a total time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 7 seconds.
The top seven positions were claimed by the host riders and their every move was cheered by the massive crowd.
As many as 60,000 spectators joined the event, including the Belgian Prime Minister, Elio Di Rupo who was delighted to see his tribe dominating the scenario.
Sven was the last amongst the top seven Belgians who ruled the day, he finished 1 minute and 11 seconds behind Niels.
Rob Peeters secured the second position, with a deficit of 24 seconds while Kevin Pauwels claimed the third podium spot.
Tom Meeusen, Bart Aernouts, Klaas Vantornout achieved the fourth, fifth and sixth positions in the respective order.
Nys was clearly disappointed by his 7th place finish and hinted that he might not participate in the 2013 edition of the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships.
Nys told Sporza shortly after the race, "It might have been the last one I rode. It's probably a bit too early to say something like this but if I look at it now I feel like saying that".
“It's the disappointment. I expected a lot from this race and felt like I was in the form of my life but it wasn't enough. Then you have to make your conclusions because this was a course where it could happen one more time," he continued.
The 35-year-old admired the tremendous performance by Niels Albert who had to win the race to make it through to the top and he successfully achieved the top spot.
Niels shared his regret on the possible departure of Nys from the championships and stated that he is one of the best cyclo-cross riders.
UCI off-Road discipline manager, Peter Van den Abeele was also shocked to hear the statement from the Belgian and stated that Nys is very much needed at the 2013 World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.
Only time will tell if Sven continuous his pursuit at the Cyclo-cross World Championships or not, as the cyclist has not given a final verdict yet.
