Sven Nys of Team Landbouwkrediet-KDL wins the Bpost Bank Trofee-GP Hasselt 2012
Former Belgian cyclo-cross champion, Sven Nys pleased his fans with the first place finish at the Bpost Bank Trofee-GP Hasselt 2012, overcoming his major rivals.
He sailed across the finish-line in a quickest time of 54 minutes and 49 seconds and occupied the top podium position.
Niels Albert of Team BKCP looked good throughout the race but could not match the likes of his in-form compatriot.
Albert fell 14 seconds short and had to settle for the second position after the race with Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor falling further 16 seconds behind at the third spot.
“I felt that Niels struggled [...]. You don’t have to go to the Koppenberg to create gaps,” Nys told Sporza.
“I had a lot more speed, one of us went out of balance. I hesitated. I think I touched him with my elbows. I thought about waiting. It was a crash who could be avoided. It wasn’t in purpose”.
“It wasn’t in purpose. If I would’ve hopped there alone I wouldn’t have crashed though,” Pauwels told Sporza.
Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor finished 30 seconds behind Nys and occupied the third position with Klaas Vantornout of Team Sunweb-Revor and Dieter Vanthourenhout of Team BKCP-Powerplus securing the fourth and the fifth spots.
Bart Wellens, Bart Aernouts, Rob Peeters, Radomir Simunek and Jim Aernouts claimed the next five positions in the respective order.
Albert also lost 20 seconds at the overall classifications; he started the race with an overall lead of 54 seconds over Nys, which is now reduced to 20 seconds only.
“I think I was the worst of the three but because Pauwels crashed I could finish second,” Albert told Sporza. “I didn’t have a great day.
Sven Nys is 20 seconds behind Albert as per the ‘Elite men’s classifications after Hassalt’ with Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor holding the third position.
Klaas Vantornout of Team Sunweb-Revor and Bart Aernouts of Team AA Drinks-Leontien.nl Cycling Team occupied the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
Bart Wellens, Thijs van Amerongen, Rob Peeters, Aurelien Duval and Marcel Meisen hold the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth positions in the respectively.
