Sven Nys wins the Superprestige Zonhoven 2012
Sven Nys managed to find the top podium spot yet again in the 2012 season after his storming performance during the Superprestige Zonhoven 2012.
The Belgian was challenged by none other than his compatriot rival Niels Albert as the duo went shoulder-to-shoulder in the final kilometres of the race.
However, it was Nys, who first completed the assigned task, crossing the finish-line in an impressive time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 53 seconds.
He was delighted after winning the race and noted that it was a tough competition as he just managed to get through the defences of his fellow citizen.
Nys cited that it was a close match and the crowd loves see the close encounters, “That’s what people want to see. It’s the riders who make the race,” he told TV-Channel Vier.
“We were matched to each other as we both had a gap which the other closed down. It was clear that the bell lap would bring the decision”.
“It was a matter of being in the lead at the right moment which was just ahead of the uphill sand section,” Nys said.
“He [Niels Albert] passed me where I didn’t expect it at all. I was forced off my bike. [...] I tried to put my bike ahead of him but I only got it next to him,” Nys said.
Niels Albert of Team BKCP-Powerplus finished 2 seconds behind at the second position with Bart Aernouts of Team AA Drink securing the third position.
Kevin Pauwels of Team Sunweb-Revor fell 29 seconds short at the fourth spot with Lars van der Haar of Team Rabobank-Giant Off-Road occupying the fifth position.
Julien Taramarcaz of Team Mountainbike Racing, Rob Peeters of Team Telenet-Fidea, Bart Wellens of Team Telenet-Fidea, Klaas Vantornout of Team Sunweb-Revor and Philipp Walsleben of Team BKCP-Powerplus occupies the next five positions respectively.
Sven Nys is now leading the Superprestige Standings after two rounds with a total number of 30 points in his pocket.
Niels Albert of Team BKCP-Powerplus is two points behind at the second position with Kevin Pauwels (25 points), Lars van der Haar (20 points) and Bart Aernouts (20 points) occupied the third, fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
