Sven Nys won the Elite men category of G.P. Sven Nys 2012
Sven Nys was brilliant during the G.P. Sven Nys 2012. He sailed through the finish-line ahead of all the main rivals and took full advantage of the home ground.
He secured a huge lead of 46 seconds over the second place finisher, Kevin Pauwels. Bart Wellens, Zdenek Stybar and Rob Peeters claimed the third, fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Nys briefed a Tv-channel, Sporza, “For an entire hour I had goose bumps. It’s been a few years since I dominated like this but I came out of the Christmas week very well and the whole town was standing behind me, united as one”.
Pauwels missed the first position. Nevertheless, he finished ahead of the world champion, Zdenek Stybar. He stated that he had never thought of finishing ahead of Stybar, especially on a muddy course like Baal.
Stybar admitted the fact that he could not match the pace of the race. He started too fast initially, and was out of fuel towards the end.
Bart Wellens of Team Telenet-Fidea made a surprising appearance on the podium with his third place finish.
Wellens commented after the race, “Before that I flatted but tried to follow Pauwels and Vantornout which cost a lot of energy; I shouldn’t have done that. Suddenly I saw Vantornout standing there and I realized that everybody can run into problems”.
It was a difficult muddy track and as many as ten cyclists failed to finish the race. Gerben De Knegt, Joeri Adams, Vincent Baestaens, Radomir Simunek, Jim Aernouts, Marco Bianco, Darryn Medhurst, Mike Thielemans, Twan Van Den Brand and John Spruyt, were
all unsuccessful.
Sven Nys, Klaas Vantornout and Zdenek Stybar won the intermediate sprint of the race with 3, 2 and 1 points, respectively.
Kevin Pauwels still leads the GVA Trofee overall classifications with 135 points, whereas Zdenek Stybar is at the second position.
Sven Nys, Niels Albert, Bart Wellens, Tom Meeusen occupied the third, fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Dutch rider Lars van der Haar won the U23 Men category of the race and currently holds the second position in the overall classifications. His compatriot, Micki Van Empel, is leading the under 23 classifications with 2 points.
