Sven Nys won the men’s category of Fidea Cyclo-cross Leuven 2011
Belgian rider, Sven Nys, secured his tenth victory of the season after sailing through the finish-line at Fidea Cyclo-cross Leuven 2011. Moreover, the cyclist has claimed four victories out of the five recent appearances in Leuven, Belgium.
During an interview with tv-channel VT4, Nys cited, "It's a very nice winning streak. I'm glad I won here today but now I have to rest so that I'll be ready for Baal where everybody else will probably be at their best over there".
Sven managed to finish the race in a total time of 1 hour and 10 seconds and secured a huge lead over his compatriot, Rob Peeters, who finished second. French rider, Francis Mourey, occupied the third spot.
Peeters and Simunek were leading the race while Nys waited for his team’s support. He was soon accompanied by Sven Vanthourenhout but even the duo could not match the likes of Peeters.
Vanthourenhout discussed the situation, "It wasn't quite a present for me because right away I had to let them go again”.
Nys also commented on the incident, "I tried to get Sven into the lead group but Rob quickly took over the command and from there it was everybody for himself".
Rob gave a tough competition to and was the biggest threat for Nys during the first five rounds.
The final lap, however, belonged to the Landbouwkrediet rider as Sven Nys bagged yet another victory to end the season.
It was the birthday of the new Dutch champion, Lars Boom, and Nys promised to offer the winning flowers to the Dutch player.
Boom finished the race at the fifteenth position, 3 minutes and 25 seconds behind the race leader.
Peeters briefed that Nys knew his week points and took full advantage of all the chances that came his way.
It was a good fight by the two Belgian riders towards the end of the season, as the top cyclists will now meet in Baal, Belgium on January 1, 2012.
Baal is Sven Nys’ and Niels Albert’s home ground, which will give them a clear advantage over other competitors.
On the other hand Marianne Vos won the Elite Women’s category of the race to claim her ninth win of the season. Daphny van den Brand finished 2 minutes and 5 seconds behind Vos and achieved the second position.
