Svetlana Kuznetsova destroys Alexandra Dulgheru in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Twelfth seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova showed her true class to destroy Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru with a bagel to secure a third round spot at Wimbledon Championships 2011, a major grass court tournament held in London, U.K.
She barely sweated to register a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the 22-year-old Romanian on Thursday.
A former world number two, Kuznetsova displayed extra-ordinary skills to crush the Romanian in just under an hour to win first nine games in a row. As a result, she booked a third round spot on their first meeting. After earning
this win at SW-19, the Russian took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Dulgheru.
The Monte Carlo resident, Kuznetsova bombarded powerful groundstrokes to reel off first six games in a row in just seventeen minutes. She faced zero breakpoints and converted three out of four breakpoint chances to her advantage
to pocket a bagel. The Russian clobbered a much higher first serve share of 71 percent as compared to Dulgheru’s 38 percent and registered an impressive 75 percent win on it.
She kept momentum rolling into the final set and strike out first three games to take a 3-0 lead before Dulgheru could hold on. The Russian then held on to her remaining serves by maintaining consistency in her game and eventually
clinched the set with an assuring 6-2 score line in thirty-four minutes. She faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of seven breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to help win comfortably. Kuznetsova produced a poor first serve share but covered it
up by committing only five unforced errors to Romanian’s ten.
The Romanian had a monotonous season so far. She raised her form in late March and early April when she made quarter-final berths at Miami and Marbella. She entered in full confidence at this major event and earned a straight set
victory against American Jill Craybas in her opening round match. However, Dulgheru stepped off gas in this match and barely did anything.
25-year-old Russian, a finalist at Dubai this year, will next face the winner of the match between nineteenth seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer and Georgian Anna Tatishvili.
