Svetlana Kuznetsova in shock Wimbledon second round loss
After falling in the third round at the French Open, Svetlana Kuznetsova has been shown the door in the second round at Wimbledon.
The 19th seed lost to Anastasia Rodionova in three sets on day four at the All England Club, as her run of poor form continues.
Indeed, this second round loss is the worst result Kuznetsova has recorded at a Grand Slam since she lost in the opening round of the 2005 US Open after entering the tournament as defending champion.
Rodionova’s 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Kuznetsova, however, propels the Australian into the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.
It’s a situation the world No. 74 would hardly have dared to dream of as she stared down the barrel of defeat in her first round match against Anne Keothovong. In that match, Rodionova fought back from 0-4 down in the third set to reel off six straight games as the Briton crumbled under the pressure of closing out the match.
It won’t get any easier from here for Rodionova though with a match against ninth seed and Australian Open semi-finalist Na Li the reward for today’s shock victory.
